The lights went up on Sun Prairie Civic Theatre (SPCT) in the spring of 1970.
Since that time, thousands of people have shared their time and talents onstage, backstage and in the front of the house with Sun Prairie and the community.

200 shows and countingEach year, SPCT produces a range of musicals, comedies and dramas. Shows produced since the beginning include favorites such as Oliver, Annie, Arsenic and Old Lace, On Golden Pond, The Odd Couple and Guys and Dolls. The Sound of Music remains the organization's best-selling show with over 2,000 tickets sold for the performance run.
Most years, SPCT stages annual children's theater productions designed to introduce youth to the performing arts. In the beginning, adults performed themed shows for children. Productions evolved over time. Today, the performances are staged by children for children with adult mentors working with high-school students on backstage production roles. SPCT also performs non-traditional shows in other venues including, most recently, murder-mystery dinner theater at local restaurant Buck & Honey's. And, with special permission from the city, SPCT even transformed the rehearsal barn into an intimate performance space for the thriller The Bad Seed (Fall 2018). In 2013, SPCT staged the "world premiere" of a locally written musical, Caffeine Dreams. And, two years later, Sun Prairie Civic Theatre became one of the first chapters of The Penguin Project, a national program with more than 40 chapters throughout the United States. The Penguin Project of SPCT program provides a supportive environment for children with disabilities to explore their creative talents. Each year, a group of artists from greater Madison take the stage to perform a modified version of a well-known Broadway musical. SPCT takes pride in the fact we continue to educate people of all ages in the experience of live theater on stage, back stage and in the audience. We hope to continue for many more years to come. |
Take a look back at SPCT's first 50 years
If it were not for Sun Prairie Civic Theatre, I would not have had this incredible career. SPCT gave me my first directing gig (at the age of 16) and now I'm a professional director. Some of my best experiences and memories are just being in the barn practicing and getting to hang out with old friends. |
our location
Performance locations vary. But, most rehearsals are held and sets are built at the Sun Prairie Civic Theatre Barn on South Bird Street in Sun Prairie.
In 1976, when the City of Sun Prairie leased the land to Sun Prairie Civic Theatre, volunteers spent countless hours cleaning the property and barn. The cleanout included removing floor-to-ceiling hay and five-foot-high piles of impacted pig manure. Since that time, the barn's undergone a series of renovations and improvements to serve the group better. |
